How we save resources

Living sustainably has become a very conscious decision for many of us in recent years. We have also made this decision and have been facing up
to the challenges that this entails every day for many years. An essential part of this is the economical use of resources in all areas of the company. Some of the measures that we implement as a sustainable company can be found here:

Sustainable packaging

We are aware that the production of our teas means that we are constantly putting new waste into circulation. But we are doing our best to completely eliminate plastic from our products on the one hand and to reduce the total amount of packaging on the other.

Since 2020, we have reduced the amount of packaging we use by 6%. That’s a start, but of course it’s far from enough. That is why we are constantly working to reduce the total amount of packaging and the proportion of packaging in our products.

You can also take a look at our disposal guide to make sure everything goes right when you dispose of your next pack of tea.

Follow these tips when disposing of your tea pack and you’ll do everything right:

We attach great importance to this:

Recycled paper

As a sustainable company, we use recycled paper wherever possible so that as little fresh fibre as possible is used and fewer trees are cut down. Unfortunately, this is not so easy in the food sector, as recycled paper in direct contact with food can lead to harmful substances being transferred to the product. This is why we cannot use recycled paper where it comes into direct contact with food. In future, however, we will switch to recycled paper for our carrier bags and printer paper, for example, and are constantly looking at new ways to reduce the use of virgin wood fibre.

FSC® certification

We source all of our paper-based and product-related packaging components exclusively from FSC®-certified sources. The FSC® seal ensures that the world's forests are utilised in an environmentally friendly, socially responsible and economically viable manner. The use of FSC®-N003684-certified material counteracts overexploitation and deforestation - an issue that is also widely discussed in the media and which we, as a sustainable company, would like to clearly oppose.

Our contribution to climate protection

Why this topic is important to us

We are a 4th generation family business, which is why intergenerational justice is important to us. As a tea-producing company, we have an interest in protecting our climate and emitting as little CO2 as possible. Many of the countries of origin from which the ingredients for our products come are already affected by climate change. We therefore want to do our part to ensure that the 1.5-degree target is not exceeded.

For this reason, our climate targets from 2024 will be based on the Science Based Target Initiative and we will focus on direct CO2 reduction measures at our sites and in our supply chain. The first step was to balance our total CO2 emissions. In the next step, we will define our climate targets for the coming years and the further reduction measures we want to use to achieve them.

Our current CO2 reduction measures at our locations:

Would you have thought that…

… all our tea packaging machines used in the TEEKANNE Group’s production facilities have been powered exclusively by electricity from renewable sources since 2020?

… we produce part of the energy we need ourselves? On the one hand, we rely on renewable energy from photovoltaic systems and, on the other, we operate an optimally utilized gas-fired combined heat and power plant.

… we have e-charging facilities for our employees as well as e-cars in our vehicle pool in Düsseldorf?

… we have set upper CO2 limits in our car policy?

… our employees can lease their bikes and e-bikes through TEEKANNE?

Against food waste

As a sustainable company, we also want to make a contribution to reducing food waste.

Sometimes we may no longer be allowed to sell goods to retailers because they no longer have a certain minimum shelf life before the best-before date. These products are still in perfect condition and of course delicious. It would therefore be a waste to destroy them. That’s why we donate most of our products to charitable organizations in such cases. Since March 2022 alone, we have been able to save 20 tons of tea from being thrown away and bring joy to many people.

One of our donation recipients is:
